Hamlet, By William Shakespeare - 1281 Words

Who exactly is Hamlet and what are his true characteristics? It may seem like an easy question, however, quite difficult to answer. Throughout Shakespeare’s play, â€Å"Hamlet,† Hamlet seems to be on the verge of insanity. However, it cannot be known for certain if Hamlet has lost his mind, To put an antic disposition on, That you, at such times seeing me, never shall, (Shakespeare 1.V.173) It may not be known if Shakespeare intended to have Hamlet evolve into a madman, however, what is known is the fact that Hamlet’s irrationality is one of, if not, the biggest flaw that Hamlet possesses. Many reasons contribute to Hamlet feeling the way he does, such as Hamlet losing faith in love, religion, society, and even philosophy. From Hamlet†¦show more content†¦It cannot be known for certain if what the ghost said actually occurred, however, Hamlet made it his goal to discover the truth and resolve the issue if what the ghost said is in fact true. Hamlet had been the only character to dialogue with the ghost and did not have just one questionable conversation; he ghost reemerged after Hamlet had murdered Polonius, advising Hamlet to go along with the plan to murder Claudius and at the same time be easy on his mother, Queen Gertrude. The ghost however, was not seen or heard by Gertrude, even though she had been in the room while this conversation occurred. These events bring along the question if Hamlet had legitimately lost his mind, and if so, had it been after the first meeting with the ghost? It actually seems as if Hamlet had the dialogue with himself, and the fact that no other character heard a noise come out of the ghost’s mouth helps contribute to this belief. Once Hamlet had been introduced to the ghost, the philosophy of Hamlet’s knowledge had come into question. Religion had betrayed Hamlet as well. The perspective Hamlet had was that his father, King Hamlet, had been murdered, while the murderer, Claudius, evolved into the next king of Denmark and married Hamlet’s mother. With this in mind, where is the religion retribution? Religion had failed King Hamlet, as well as Hamlet himself; A villain kills my father, and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain
